Just because you are a social media user does not make you a social media expert! Why? Because as users we focus on how “we” use social media or a particular channel. As social media marketers we focus on how our target interacts on social media and how social media operates. It is not about the individual channels or platforms, it is about the interactions and how we can utilize and become involved in the interactions.

What are the defining characteristics of social media for marketers?

  • Social interactivity
  • Openness
  • Flexibility
  • Fast pace of the information flow
    • One-to-one is narrowcasting
    • One-to-many is broadcasting

Social media marketing is not about the channels, it is about the interactions.

Interactions first, channels second!
