Primary Data Collection – Wk 5

This week we are starting to talk about collecting Primary data. Primary data includes:

  • Demographics/Socioeconomic – age, education, occupation, marital status, gender, and income
  • Personality/Lifestyle – Personality refers to the normal patterns of behavior exhibited by an individual including attributes, traits, and mannerisms
  • Attitudes – An individual’s overall evaluation of something, what they think or how much they like something
  • Awareness/Knowledge  – Insight into, or understanding of facts about, some object or phenomenon
  • Intentions – Anticipated or planned future behavior
  • Motivation – why people behave as they do

We have two different methods of collecting Primary Data:

  1. Observation – recording the subject’s actions
  2. Communication – subject answers questions
    1. Personal Interviews
    2. Telephone interviews
    3. Mail questionnaires
    4. Internet-based questionnaires

We will be utilizing observation research this week in our coffee shop/lunch place research.
